We've all heard that it takes a village to raise a child. A village can also help during pregnancy, labour and birth as well as during the process of transitioning to this new, ground shaking role of mom (and dad). In simpler societies, a woman would have been exposed to birth and motherhood long before she took on the role. And she would have plenty of community to help her along the way. Often this is not the case in our current society, and we are left much to our own devices using trial and error as new parents. This can be overwhelming to parents. Especially as they are often given conflicting advice from all sides. A comforting touch, a knowledgeable listening ear, and access to community resources is what I can provide to the new/expectant family. Let me help you find your village!
Susan was our doula for labour and birth and provided extra postpartum support for Zoë and our family in her first 8 months. We found Susan to be patient and incredibly reliable both before and during labour. She was knowledgeable and provided much needed emotional support for both my husband and me. She was discrete, respected our privacy and made sure the day was about Zoë and us. She helped us process and think about the choices we had to make during the labour.
Her support during a difficult postpartum period due to health issues for both mom and baby was invaluable. She instinctively knew what was most helpful when she entered our house, whether to take the baby for a walk and let me get some much needed rest, get some clothes in the wash, clean up the kitchen, or make sure we had healthy food to eat. She developed a special bond with both our girls and could get them happy and smiling in no time.
I would recommend Susan to anyone who wants a discrete, caring, knowledgeable, and compassionate person to assist them through labour and the postpartum period."
